Research beyond the laboratory

A Day in the Field

Sampling the rocky intertidal shores

Estuary sampling using RUVs

Beyond the Paper

Things you don't see in a scientific publication

From muddy river banks to barnacle-covered rocks, our fieldwork takes us wherever the water meets the land. We sort samples on the shore, tow plankton nets in life jackets, and work with the tide rather than against it. These are the long, wet, hands-on days that never appear in a scientific publication, but they are where our research begins.

Wild Coast Encounters

Brown Mussel

Perna perna

A common sight on Wild Coast rocky shore. Our team studies the condition and biochemical makeup of the brown mussel along Wild Coast estuaries

Golden Kelp

Ecklonia radiata

This kelp's root-like holdfasts shelter a whole community of small crustaceans and other invertebrates, which we sample and study along the coast.

Freshwater Shrimps

Family Atyidae

Many freshwater shrimps in the family Atyidae develop as larvae in estuarine or marine water before the young return upstream to rivers. This links freshwater and coastal habitats.

About Us

The Joint Marine Laboratory, established with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and NRF-SAIAB, advances marine and coastal research along South Africa's Wild Coast, addressing food security, climate resilience, and the next generation of marine scientists.
